Wilkes Weekly: Murashov's Resurgence
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins demonstrated their resilience by facing the same opponent, Charlotte, at their home rink, and securing a tie in both games last week. The WBS Penguins and the Charlotte Checkers battled to a 5-1 victory each.
Nick Hart, from WBSPenguins.com (https://www.wbspenguins.com/penguins-weekly-1-13-26/), provides the details.
Friday, January 9th: Penguins 5, Charlotte 1
Tristan Broz led the Penguins' offensive charge, breaking the team's three-game losing streak with four points. His linemates, Atley Calvert and Valtteri Puustinen, contributed a goal and an assist each. Sergei Murashov made 21 saves, showcasing his prowess in goalkeeping.
Saturday, January 10th: Penguins 1, Charlotte 5
The Checkers turned the tables, securing their first home win in the season series with a 5-1 score, mirroring Friday's result. Ryan Graves scored Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's lone goal on the power play, assisted by Ville Koivunen and Valtteri Puustinen.
The recent performance of Sergei Murashov has been a topic of discussion. After his two worst performances of the season in the previous two games, Murashov bounced back with a strong performance against Charlotte. This resurgence is notable, considering his previous consistency, where he had only allowed a maximum of three goals in a game and kept two or fewer goals in 12 out of 14 games. The recent dip in form serves as a learning curve for the young goalie, emphasizing the need for experience in the minor leagues.
The team's dynamics have been fluid, with Rafael Harvey-Pinard called up to Pittsburgh, replaced by Tristan Broz, who recorded a four-point game. Caleb Jones is on a conditioning stint, Ville Koivunen is back in the AHL, and Ryan Graves has been recalled to Pittsburgh. Matt Dumba remains a consistent presence.
This season, the team's scoring has been distributed among several players, with no individual surpassing 11 goals. Nine players have scored at least six goals, including Danton Heinen, who had a surprising stint in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Valtteri Puustinen, a stalwart for WBS since 2021-22, is now closing in on scoring records in franchise history, with 170 points to his name.
Despite the team's fluctuations, WBS has maintained a strong position in second place in the division. The Penguins are gearing up for a crucial week, starting with a game at Providence tonight, followed by a weekend at home against Hartford, the last-place team in the league.
