Whooping Cough Surge: Vaccination Gaps & What You Need to Know (2026)

Whooping Cough on the Rise: A Call to Action

It's alarming, but the Americas region is facing a significant challenge: a resurgence of whooping cough. Cases are skyrocketing, and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is urgently calling for increased vaccination efforts.

In 2022, the region saw 3,284 cases. But by last year, the number had exploded to 66,184! And sadly, 2025 is projected to be even worse. This dramatic increase highlights a critical need to protect vulnerable populations, especially children under five.

PAHO emphasizes the urgency of ensuring high and consistent vaccination coverage. Dr. Daniel Salas, from PAHO, points out that the resurgence of whooping cough reveals gaps in immunization and surveillance. The goal is clear: to prevent outbreaks by protecting those most at risk.

The U.S. Situation: A Closer Look

Here's where it gets controversial: Vaccination rates dipped during the COVID-19 pandemic. While coverage has somewhat recovered, with around 89% for the first dose and 87% for the third, significant disparities exist between countries.

The United States is currently experiencing the highest number of whooping cough cases. In 2025 alone, there have been 25,057 confirmed and probable cases, including 13 deaths. Washington state, California, and Florida are among the hardest hit. Peru follows with 3,200 infections and 49 deaths. Sadly, most deaths across all countries have occurred in infants under one year old.

Fast-Tracked Antibiotic Approval: A Boost for U.S. Manufacturing

In other news, the FDA has approved a U.S.-manufactured version of the oral antibiotic Augmentin XR (amoxicillin-clavulanate potassium). This is the first approval under a new pilot program designed to speed up drug reviews.

This approval, completed in just two months, is a significant win. The FDA usually takes 10 to 12 months for drug application reviews. Augmentin XR is an extended-release formulation used to treat bacterial infections in both adults and children. The agency hopes this will boost U.S. drug manufacturing and address antibiotic shortages. The plant where the drug will be made was originally owned by GSK before they sold their U.S. penicillin business in 2010. The FDA is focused on products that meet significant medical needs, promote domestic manufacturing, and increase drug affordability.

FDA Commissioner Marty Makary stated that this approval is a step towards a new era of manufacturing in the U.S. and strengthens national security. USAntibiotics president Patrick Cashman emphasizes that domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing is a "national security imperative, not a luxury."

Avian Flu Outbreaks Continue

Finally, let's look at the ongoing issue of avian influenza (HPAI). New outbreaks have been reported in five states. Indiana is the hardest hit, with outbreaks affecting thousands of birds in commercial facilities. Outbreaks have also been reported in North Dakota and backyard flocks in Washington, Wyoming, and West Virginia.

108 flocks have been affected by HPAI outbreaks in the past 30 days, impacting 1.16 million birds. Preliminary lab results for dead vultures in Ohio indicate they died from HPAI.
