Toyota Recalls Over 1 Million Vehicles for Backup Camera Issues: A Potential Hazard on the Road
Toyota has issued a massive recall affecting over 1 million vehicles, citing a potential issue with the rearview camera system. The defect may cause the camera to malfunction when the driver performs certain actions too soon after starting the vehicle, posing a significant safety risk.

Firstly, the software can cause the rearview image to freeze when the driver selects reverse within a specific time frame after starting the car. Secondly, the image may not display at all at the next startup if the car is turned on and then off within a specific time.
Toyota's investigation, initiated in April 2024 after receiving field reports in Japan, uncovered a software problem. The automaker decided to issue a recall as the vehicles could fail to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The issue arises when a vehicle is shifted into reverse within 0.7 to 2.6 seconds after ignition, causing the screen to freeze for up to 1.8 seconds. This delay is crucial, as it allows for potential hazards like another car or a child to cross the vehicle's reverse path.
