A Taiwanese restaurant, Fong Wei Wu, has been featured in the Michelin Guide's first-ever Philippines guide, recognizing its exceptional home-style Taiwanese cuisine. The restaurant, owned and operated by a Taiwanese woman in Quezon City, Metro Manila, is one of 74 eateries to receive the prestigious 'Michelin Selected' honor. One restaurant received two Michelin stars, eight received one star, and 25 were awarded a 'Bib Gourmand'. The guide, published on October 30, focuses on restaurants in Metro Manila and Cebu. The owner, Linda, expressed her overwhelming joy at receiving such recognition, stating that it was 'indescribable' to receive an affirmation of her culinary skills at her age. Linda's journey began in 2000 when she moved to the Philippines with her daughter to improve her English. During her five-year stay, she discovered her passion for cooking and, with her abundant free time, opened a restaurant serving classic Taiwanese dishes like beef noodle soup and braised pork rice. Despite the challenges of starting a business in a foreign country, Linda's determination led her to persevere. She traveled to attend Taiwanese cooking classes, ensuring the authenticity of her dishes by importing ingredients like soy sauce and doubanjiang directly from Taiwan. The Michelin Guide describes Fong Wei Wu as a 'cosy family-run spot' serving a daily-changing spread of 15-20 dishes, including the recommended fried bihon, a harmonious blend of soy umami and vegetable sweetness. The restaurant is located at 82 Banawe Street corner Samat Street, Quezon, Metro Manila.
