A new chapter begins for Ghana's judiciary! On November 17, 2025, in a momentous event streamed live from Jubilee House, President John Dramani Mahama officially swore in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the new Chief Justice of Ghana. This followed Parliament's approval of his nomination just four days earlier, on November 13, 2025.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie's journey to this esteemed position began with his nomination on September 23, 2025. He brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served with distinction across various levels of the judiciary, including the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court.
Interestingly, he had already been serving as the Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025. This was after the suspension and eventual removal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. This transition highlights the dynamic nature of leadership within the judicial system.
During his vetting on November 10, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie outlined his vision for the future. He pledged to lead with an open, bipartisan approach, fostering collaboration and understanding. He also firmly committed to upholding judicial independence, ensuring that the judiciary can operate without undue influence. Furthermore, he emphasized his dedication to expanding access to justice for all Ghanaians.
