Jakub Mensik's Triumph: A New Tennis Star is Born!
It's official: Jakub Mensik has clinched the Auckland crown, ending Sebastian Baez's winning streak in a thrilling match! This victory isn't just a win; it's a statement. At just 20 years old, Mensik is proving he's a force to be reckoned with in the world of tennis.
This marks Mensik's second ATP Tour title, following his impressive win at the 2025 Miami Open. The match took place on January 17, 2026, and saw Mensik defeat Baez with a score of 6-3, 7-6(7).
From the get-go, Mensik dominated, showcasing a stellar serving performance. He fired 11 aces in the first set alone, winning a staggering 95% of points behind his first serve. He secured the only break of serve in the sixth game, setting the stage for what seemed like a straightforward victory.
But here's where it gets controversial... Baez, who had a perfect start to the 2026 season with seven consecutive wins, fought back fiercely. He broke Mensik's serve to force a tie-break and even had three set points at 6/3. But Mensik, displaying remarkable composure, fought off the danger with a stunning drop volley, an ace, and a return winner, ultimately sealing the victory in 82 minutes.
"I would say it’s been a great start to the year," Mensik shared in his on-court interview. "I’m super happy that after my preparation and preseason... I showed the performance that I wanted. I’m super happy for the win."
And this is the part most people miss... This victory isn't just about the trophy; it's about Mensik's rise in the rankings. He will climb one spot to No. 17 in the PIF ATP Rankings on Monday. He will now head to Melbourne to prepare for his first-round Australian Open encounter against Pablo Carreno Busta.
