This is the grim reality facing Dundee Rep, the historic Scottish theatre where Cox first graced the boards at just 15 years old. Now, this beloved cultural institution, along with other Dundee treasures like the Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) centre and the iconic Antarctic exploration ship Discovery, are under threat of losing all council funding. But here's where it gets even more heartbreaking: these proposed cuts come just months after Dundee Rep and DCA secured new three-year funding from the Scottish Government via Creative Scotland.
The local council, grappling with a projected £8.4 million budget deficit for the upcoming financial year, has put these cultural cornerstones on the chopping block. Funding for Dundee’s prestigious UNESCO City of Design status—the only UK city to hold this title—is also at risk. While council chiefs argue that tough decisions are necessary, culture leaders and residents are sounding the alarm.
And this is the part most people miss: Dundee’s cultural renaissance over the past decade has been nothing short of remarkable. From community innovation to global recognition, the city has built a reputation as a creative hub. Cutting funding now, critics argue, would not only deepen the financial deficit but also create a wellbeing deficit—robbing residents of spaces to gather, learn, and belong—and a trust deficit, as voices are ignored year after year.
Creative Dundee, representing artists and organizations, warns that these cuts risk turning Dundee into “a city of culture cuts.” They point out that previous consultations showed overwhelming public opposition to slashing cultural funding. Yet, here we are again, with cultural workers and concerned residents forced to shift their focus from delivering impactful programs to crisis management, advocacy, and lobbying.
But here’s the controversial question: Is sacrificing long-term cultural and economic growth for short-term financial relief truly the answer? Or will Dundee lose the very creative reputation that attracts visitors, students, and investment?
The council’s official budget consultation, launching by the end of this month, will run for four weeks. Willie Sawers, depute convener of the council’s governance committee, acknowledges the difficulty of these decisions but emphasizes the need for public input. “None of the savings proposals have been taken up,” he assures, urging residents to share their priorities and concerns.
Meanwhile, Dundee Rep continues to thrive artistically, with recent performances like The Glass Menagerie and Brian Cox’s return earlier this year in Make It Happen. Alan Cumming is set to star in two major shows next year, further cementing the theatre’s cultural significance.
The DCA, shortlisted for the UK’s “Museum of the Year” prize last year, stands as another testament to Dundee’s cultural prowess. Yet, both institutions now face an uncertain future.
